Timeline of Key Moments in Consumer Electronics
Advertising company Permuto has an illustrated timeline of "Key Moments In Consumer Electronics." It’s a cool graphic but is missing my beloved C64 and the GPS revolution. What else do you think they’ve missed?
In less than 40 years, we have gone from Pong to the personal computing tablet (i.e. the rumored Apple iTablet). Below is a timeline which highlights past innovation and change, offering a window back to yesteryear, and the iconic gadgets and technologies that we associate with our past:

Online ad company Permuto put up this nifty graphic on their company blog, showing a timeline of consumer technology from Pong forwards. Obviously we GeekDad could have added a few dozen suggestions to the list, but how many of the devices played a part in your formative years? And what will the devices that fill the same places for our kids? You can read the blog post here.

San Jose Gadgets Examiner - Of top 20 holiday gifts, 17 require electricity

Of top 20 holiday gifts, 17 require electricity
The wooden train set and the dollhouse appear to be over as favorite Christmas gifts this year, as 17 of 20 top-selling gifts are consumer electronics products, according to an online survey.
Game consoles, laptops, navigation devices and cameras dominated the top 20 most searched for gifts in the "Holiday Shopping Trends" report released this week by Permuto, provider of an online advertising network.
Permuto tracked product category searches with the help of partners PriceGrabber.com and Like.com to see what people are looking for this holiday season. It only tracked the most popular products of online shoppers, not those gong to physical stores.
Of the top sellers, only women's boots, puzzles and games and dolls operate without the use of electricity or batteries (save for the occasional Chatty Kathy or her modern-day equivalent.)
The Top 20 product categories are as follows:
LCD or plasma TVs
Cameras
Laptop computers
GPS navigation systems
MP3 player.
External hard drives
Camcorders
Games and puzzles (non-electric)
Game consoles and accessories
Women's boots (non-electric)
Printers
Blu-ray players
LCD computer monitors
Watches (are there any wind-ups left?)
Electric toys
Desktop computers
Wii games (need a Wii console to play them)
Educational toys (example, EyeClops Night Vision toy)
Dolls
Xbox consoles and accessories
While traffic to online shopping sites is up this year over last, shoppers claim to be tightening their belts, Permuto says. More than half (52.9 percent) of shoppers surveyed said they'll be spending less this year than last, 42.3 percent will be spending about the same and only 4.8 percent will be spending more. The largest category of shoppers (36 percent) said they'll probably spend between $100 and $499 total on gifts.
Don't forget to save for the electric bill.

San Jose Gadget Examiner - iPods, Garmins dominate holiday gift shopping

iPods, Garmins dominate holiday gift shopping
Of the top 20 most sought after consumer electronics products online this holiday season, 20 percent are Garmin GPS navigation systems and nearly one-third bear the brand name Apple.
Such are the nuggets of information gleaned from a survey of online consumer products searches called "The Active Shopper Report" from Permuto, an online advertising network provider.
Most of the hot selling Apple products are variations of the iPod music player: the iPod Nano 8GB, 4th generation (#7 on the Top 20); iPod Touch 8GB (#10); Apple Macbook notebook computer (#11); iPod Touch 16GB (#12); iPod Touch 32GB (#15); and the the 3rd generation iPod Nano 4GB (#16).
Garmin held the number 3, 5, 8 and 18 positions with variations of its Nuvi line of GPS navigation systems.
Topping the list is the Nintendo Wii game console, whose strong demand is indicative of another online trend -- customers are shopping online for discounts. The Active Shopper Report noted that buyers of the Wii were enjoying average 22 percent discounts in the purchase price, compared to a year ago, the deepest of any product.
The complete Top 20 list looks like this:
Nintendo Wii
Samsung LED TV
Garmin Nuvi 255W
Canon Digital Rebel X5I camera
Nuvi 265WT
Nikon D90 SLR digital camera
Apple iPod Nano 8GB
Nuvi 765T
Wii Fit
iPod Touch 8GB
Macbook
iPod touch 16GB
Dell Inspiron Mini netbook
Nikon D90 DX camera
iPod Touch 32GB
iPod Nano 4GB (3rd Gen)
Xbox 360 premium system
Nuvi 755T
Panasonic Blu-Ray player
Canon EOS Rebel XS
The rankings were based on the volume of product searches as reported by PriceGrabber.com and Like.com

E-Gear - Survey Names Wii Top Product

Published on December 15, 2009

A new ranking of the most popular consumer electronics products has put the Nintendo Wii console in the top spot, followed by Samsung's LED TV, the Garmin Nuvi 255W and the Canon Digital Rebel XSI camera. That's according to the second annual Active Shopper Report from search engine marketing firm Permuto.
Garmin's Nuvi 265WT, Nikon's D90 SLR digital camera, the Apple 8GB iPod Nano and Garmin Nuvi 765T took the next four spots. The survey presumably excluded mobile phones, hence the exclusion of iPhone, BlackBerry and Android products.
The survey also found that CE products took eight of the top ten spots in the most-searched-for products on the Web, with the iPod Touch taking the top spot, and the iPod, Nintendo DS and Wii taking the third, fourth and fifth spots.
PriceGrabber.com and Like.com also contributed to the survey.
